5/2 - Vaping Survey

General Activity Outline

The 1 - - 3 of each activity

WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA?

The Big Idea is just that: the one nugget all advisees should leave the X-Block understanding.  Share The Big Idea first thing - project it, post it, someone read it off the site, however you want to do it!  With more opportunities for choice in activity this year, The Big Idea will work to anchor everyone to essentially the same outcome.

HOW TO GET THERE

This section will outline the instructions for the activity. As much as possible, different options will be offered for how the content is reached. Every group is encouraged to work together to choose the best method, with the advisor having ultimate discretion.  Try to make these calls by the Tuesday before the X Block period so you can request any needed materials. [TIP: use homeroom time or the last 2 minutes of X-Block to make choices for the next session] This section should take about 10-15 minutes.

BEFORE YOU GO

A few minutes before the bell it is important to stop and wrap-up the actvitity, even if all the listed steps were not completed (remember: there are usually more things listed than there is time to do it - only to prevent idle time, not stress anyone out!). In the wrap-up, read the take away together, have a few people respond, and send along the responses. Submissions can be sent right through the webpage by a student or the teacher (BYOD!), just fill in the purple box!

1
REMINDER
  • No Cell Phones out during advisory unless they are part of the activity

  • All school rules apply in advisory

  • All students should be participating in the Advisory Activity.

If you have a student who is disruptive or refuses to participate in a productive manner please send them to room 330 and send an email to Xblock@spyponders.com and the students dean.

TODAY'S BIG IDEA

 During today's Advisory:

Students will fill out a survey about vaping created by the 84 Club to address vaping in the Arlington community.

THIS SURVEY IS COMPLETELY CONFIDENTIAL AND ANONYMOUS. No responses will be traced back to the respondent. Please answer all questions truthfully.

HOW TO GET THERE

The information you give will be used to improve health education at Arlington High School for young people like yourself.
Before Advisory

Please have your computer and projector ready to show the Vaping Survey Presentation.

Please do not show the videos until AFTER the students take the survey.

Detailed Steps for Activity

Vaping Survey Presentation:

Presentation Highlights

1.  Today during advisory you will first take a short survey about vaping.  It is important to read all the information on this page before you take the survey:

  • This survey was created by your classmates that are in the 84 club here at AHS. The students received a mini grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public health to do this research. With the guidance of a student from the Harvard Chan School of Public Health they developed this survey.

  • Their goal is to collect data about vaping use, analyze that data and make some recommendations to our local board of health.

  • The survey is anonymous and is administered without judgement. The goal is to collect scientific data that will help public health officials develop prevention education for students in grades 5-8th.

2. What is the 84 Club?

The Arlington High School Chapter of The 84 Club was  the leading chapter in the State for 2015, 16 and 18! As a part of the 84 club, students help fight big tobacco companies while learning and educating our community about the tactics they use to target youth. Opportunities to attend statewide leadership conferences, train peers and work independently will be provided.

When does the 84 club meet? Tuesdays during X block, room 339

Who can I contact to find out more information?

Mr. Amirault, jamirault@arlington.k12.ma.us

3. Take the survey (5 minutes):

  1. The survey was sent to you through your spyponders account.  Please open your email and click on the link.

  2. You can also access the survey through this link: https://forms.gle/yGKKtDNXFDt8kWg29

4. Optional Videos:

Video #1 (4:00): Vaping Caused One Teen His Health and Dreams: Nicotine addiction came with a high price for this high school hockey player, and he is not alone.  Increasing popular vape devices like JUUL pose health risks and can harm developing brains. (PBS, 3/26/19)

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/vaping-cost-one-teen-his-health-and-dreams/

Video #2 (6:24): Juulers Against Juuls (Students Against Nicotine, 5/3/18)

https://youtu.be/7EsNG7RcStQ

5. Discussion Questions:

  1. Do you think youth driven research can help public health officials protect younger children?

  2. You may have noticed that the students in the second video make recommendations to eliminate the sale of flavored juul and nicotine products. Do you agree or disagree with this?

  3. Why do you think Juuling and vaping is a concern to public health officials and school administrators?
