6/6 - Restorative Justice

General Activity Outline

The 1 - - 3 of each activity

WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA?

The Big Idea is just that: the one nugget all advisees should leave the X-Block understanding.  Share The Big Idea first thing - project it, post it, someone read it off the site, however you want to do it!  With more opportunities for choice in activity this year, The Big Idea will work to anchor everyone to essentially the same outcome.

HOW TO GET THERE

This section will outline the instructions for the activity. As much as possible, different options will be offered for how the content is reached. Every group is encouraged to work together to choose the best method, with the advisor having ultimate discretion.  Try to make these calls by the Tuesday before the X Block period so you can request any needed materials. [TIP: use homeroom time or the last 2 minutes of X-Block to make choices for the next session] This section should take about 10-15 minutes.

3

BEFORE YOU GO

A few minutes before the bell it is important to stop and wrap-up the actvitity, even if all the listed steps were not completed (remember: there are usually more things listed than there is time to do it - only to prevent idle time, not stress anyone out!). In the wrap-up, read the take away together, have a few people respond, and send along the responses. Submissions can be sent right through the webpage by a student or the teacher (BYOD!), just fill in the purple box!

1
REMINDER
  • No Cell Phones out during advisory unless they are part of the activity

  • All school rules apply in advisory

  • All students should be participating in the Advisory Activity.

If you have a student who is disruptive or refuses to participate in a productive manner please send them to room 330 and send an email to Xblock@spyponders.com and the students dean.

TODAY'S BIG IDEA

The goal of today's advisory is to:

  • To learn more about the process of restorative justice.

  • To understand when it is appropriate to use restorative justice and why.

  • To give more context to the vandalism and hate speech that happened at AHS last year.

HOW TO GET THERE

“Restorative justice is a process whereby all the parties with a stake in a particular offence come together to resolve collectively how to deal with the aftermath of the offence and its implications for the future.”
Tony F. Marshall
Before Advisory

Have a computer and projector ready to show the Restorative Justice Presentation.

Detailed Steps for Activity

Restorative Justice Presentation

Presentation Highlights:

Step 1: What are the goals of this advisory:

  • To learn more about the process of restorative justice.

  • To understand when it is appropriate to use restorative justice and why.

  • To give more context to the vandalism and hate speech that happened at AHS last year.

Step 2: Who endorsed the video you will be watching about restorative justice?

  • Diversity Task Group:  ¨We are a group of Arlington residents who are committed to making our town inclusive, fostering awareness, community, and action, and creating safe spaces where all voices are welcome”

Step 3: Who is ACMi?

  • ACMi stands for Arlington Community Media, Inc.

  • ACMi mission statement: “Arlington Community Media is dedicated to providing an electronic forum for the free exchange of information and ideas which reflect the talents, skills, interests, concerns, and diversity of the Arlington community”.

  • ACMi has been instrumental in putting the video together, helping conduct the interviews and edit the video together.

Step 4: What the video you will be watching be about:

  • Since the act of vandalism that occured at AHS last spring, many students have felt a lack of closure and healing.

  • Additionally, many do not understand the process of Restorative Justice in general, and do not understand how the perpetrators came to terms with their actions

  • A group of students have gotten together to create an informative video about the process of Restorative Justice

  • Hopefully, this can answer some of your questions. Any additional questions or comments can be sent to c4rj@gmail.com

Step 5:  The Restorative Justice Video

Step 6: Follow-up/Discussion questions:

  1. Has your understanding or perspective of Restorative Justice changed?

  2. Do you have a better idea of how the perpetrators of the vandalism were held accountable?

  3. Do you think Restorative Justice is an effective alternative to more traditional forms of punitive action?
