A Brief

History

The desire for an

effective advisory program

at AHS was expressed

several years ago during the

school's NEASC preparations.

Since           then, the idea has taken a few

different       forms: Advisory 1.0, ICARE, etc.

Then, in the spring of 2015, a formal

committee was constructed with the intent to

take these ideas, concentrated time and

effort, and a healthy optimism and

truly create something worthwhile.

Thus, X-Block was born; a program

aimed at elevating positive

school culture.

Our Goals

The purpose of the X-Block program boils down to three, core goals:

Create and foster connections between teachers and students
Provide a consistent conduit for communication with students
3
Create and foster positive school climate and culture
So what does this actually look like during the 24 minutes we spend together roughly three times a month?
These three goals were then used to create a working definition of what X-Block is on a day-to-day basis

X-Block is:

In its first year, X-Block strove to figure out how best to utilize this scant time together. Many different types of activities were tried out, tons of feedback was gathered, and fun was had.

In this second year, the activities have shifted a bit to accommodate as many student and staff requests as possible - trying to reach a healthy balance of fun, informative, and fulfilling. To that end, the, roughly, three meetings a month are allocated accordingly:

one meeting for a focused activity
topics range from finances, to environmental consciousness, to study habits
one meeting to work on a long-term project
"Long Term Projects" for 10th & 11th grades - "MiXr Project" for 9th & 12th
and one meeting strictly for fun & games
otherwise known as "Grab Bag" where activities can be anything fun!
